HISTORY
In 2015, having heard of what I did to replace the gear for my Model 18/19 using 3D Printing Technology, my coworker he asked me to do the same for his for Model 17 gear.  His Model 17 gear also suffered the same broken fate as our Model 19.  I set out to reverse engineer the broken gear.  Knowing that the reason for the gear breaking over time is its close proximity to the drive motor and its exposure to constant heat, I decided to improve upon the original gear design.
IMPROVED DESIGN & MATERIAL
The following improvements are incorporated to the
design
of the
new gear:
-Spokes that double as Fan blades to blow some air on the motor and cool the chamber.
-Lighter yet sturdy gear with the spoke design compared to the original.  This lessens the load on the aging motor in spinning the gear, increasing its life.
-Symmetrical Gear that produces very little vibration as the inertia of the gear is distributed evenly.  Compared to similar gears in the market, the fan blades are spread out evenly (no heavy side).  Unevenness in a rotating gear will add vibration wherever the heavy part of the gear is at when it’s spinning.
-PETG plastic – same durable plastic used heavily in drink bottles food safe containers.  It’s now readily available and affordable which makes for the price of this gear very competitive.
PROVEN & TESTED
The new and improved gear has been working well on my coworker and our own Model 17 for since 2015 and has sharpened numerous graphite and coloured pencils.  I have a video of this gear in operation; please contact me if you would like to see it.  Each gear is batch tested to fit in our Model 17.
INSTALLATION
The additional images in this listing show the sequential removal/installation of the sharpener gear.  Once the old gear is removed, orient the new gear the same way as the original (round hole first) then simply slide the new gear into the slot. It should be a sliding snug fit.
The original Model 17 gear is installed with a hairpin clip
and this gear is designed to install the same way.
This gear will NOT fit in a Model 18/19 as that model requires a bigger gear.  I am also selling that gear on another listing.
